“The girls are learning a strong sense of responsibility and of belonging in carrying out their assigned duties like cleaning, taking care of places and things for common use, house-keeping etc… Sisters and staff follow them up closely in their daily assignment and we continue to accompany the girls in their formative journey with much love and dedication.”

The centre has officially been renamed to Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre – Toul Kork, removing ‘for girls’ to promote inclusivity and prepare for the admission of boys to the school of hospitality in the future.

The school curriculum has been updated and undergone a name change with the computer and secretarial course changed to “accounting” and “office management”, and food technology and hotel service courses into “school of hospitality.” The school of hospitality offers a range of subjects including culinary skills, baking, food and beverage service, housekeeping, cosmetology, and front office work. In 2023, the school has also offered Chinese classes as an additional language. Classes continue to be 100% onsite which both students and Sisters are excited about.

On January 6th, two teachers and Sr Lakana went to Thailand to learn how manage restaurants and learn about interesting International Menu. They visited two famous restaurants such as: “DI MARIA Steak and Winery” which has a capacity of 50 customers and “Maria Pizzeria & Restaurant” which has a capacity of 1,000.

“Though at times, it can be very demanding, it gives us joy however, to help them understand gradually their identity and dignity and so offer them to value their lives and protect them from the danger of being traffifficked and exploited.”

Stories from the ground

Currently, the school has a total of 117 students enrolled with 97 in accounting and office management and 20 in the school of hospitality. Indirectly, families of students, those who will employ these students in the future and the surround community are benefiting from this project. Graduates can become agents of change in society and be able to live dignified lives.
Jorani* is a first year student studying in the school of hospitality. At 19 years old, Jorani* comes from Tbong Khmum province. She has 3 siblings and both her parents work as farmers.

“Coming to study at this school is really great for me, and I am very happy because before coming to study here, it was really diffifficult. My family are farmers, living a poor life from day to day; and sometimes there is almost no money to buy anything to eat. I have lived with perseverance since I was a child, never giving up on learning… my parents want their children to continue their education even though they cannot afford it. While studying here, I gained a lot of experience and knowledge because the school has good manners, guides to be honest, respect, and love each other; as well as teachers who teach well and sisters who always give us advice every day which makes my mood really excited. I chose the culinary art at Don Bosco Vocational Training Center - Toul Kork. It was my passion and my dream. I want to become a talented chef, and every day I try to do it gradually and start dreaming for the future.”
