The event comes ahead of the launch of Catholic Mission's 2019 Church Appeal, focusing on protection and development of children in Ghana, who may fall victim to harmful traditional practices.
Kevin Meese, Diocesan Director of Catholic Mission Melbourne, said: 'It is important to raise awareness whenever we are confronted by the inhumane treatment of children. The people who attend our event will be a source of inspiration to others through the information they receive. I’m most grateful to them for their generosity.'
In parts of Ghana, some babies and children are considered to be 'spirit children' if they are born with disability, as twins, or if the mother dies during childbirth. The Ghanaian Church is working with local communities and authorities to address this practice and protect the children at risk.
The High Tea will be held at the Park Hyatt on Thursday, with a focus on celebration of the Church's work and all funds raised going towards projects in Ghana which support children at risk and aim to transform attitudes and practices which place them at risk.
